Topic: Applying Models for Change in International Development

Facilitators:

Patricia García is a talented trainer with more than 25 years of experience in training, facilitation and project management in the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa.  Ms. García has extensive experience in designing, implementing and delivering leadership and management training courses, coaching leaders in international organizations, and facilitating workshops related to team strengthening, multicultural communication, and emotional intelligence.  Since joining TRG in 2003, she has provided training for numerous organizations including USAID, the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Botanic Gardens, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, CGIAR, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).  Her other clients include the International Center for Research on Women, the United Nations Population Fund, and the Organization of American States. She holds a Masters Degree in Human Resources Development from George Washington University and an MBA specializing in Human Resources from the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. She is also certified in Emotional Intelligence and Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI).  Ms. García is fluent in Spanish and English.

Paul Purnell is a talented trainer, facilitator and organizational development consultant with over 30 years of professional experience. He specializes in providing training and strategic planning programs for international organizations, government agencies and non-profit organizations. He has designed and delivered training courses on leadership, management, communication skills, cultural competency, change management, and emotional intelligence. Since joining TRG in December 2004, Mr. Purnell has served on teams delivering training courses and workshops to the International Monetary Fund, the Foreign Service Institute, USAID, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the USDA Forest Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency.  He currently serves as a master trainer and curriculum designer in support of the capacity building program of the USAID Feed the Future (FTF) Initiative. Under the USAID-funded Palestinian Health Sector Reform and Development Project, Mr. Purnell serves as part of a four-person team that is designing and delivering leadership training to senior and mid-level Ministry of Health officials in West Bank Gaza, and conducting training of trainers to develop local capacity to deliver the training.

Stephen Yank is an organizational development consultant and trainer with over 30 years of experience.  Mr. Yank has provided executive and leadership coaching services to supervisors, managers, and executives at the International Trade Administration of the Department of Commerce and the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor.  He has also provided coaching to U.S. Forest Service staff.  He has designed and facilitated retreats for USAID, the Department of State, the US Forest Service International Programs, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Mr. Yank has served on TRG teams that deliver leadership courses for the US Department of State, International Monetary Fund, Millennium Challenge Corporation, World Food Program, Pfizer Corporation’s Global Fellows Program, and ActionAid International.  He also serves as coordinator of the TRG team for USAID’s three-year global health project “Health Systems 20/20” in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mr. Yank is fluent in French and English.  He has worked in Benin, the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Kenya, Liberia, and Republic of South Africa.

Program:
Representatives from Training Resources Group, Inc. will share insights into the application of models for change in international development settings like capacity building programs or leadership training programs. They will review their experiences applying leadership and change models such as John Kotter’s eight step model for leading change, Peter Block’s strategic influencing framework and Robert Schaeffer and Associates’ rapid results approach; getting to apply these models in larger development settings, diverse cultures and languages.  During the session, participants will explore challenges, lessons learned, strategies and key skills for OD professionals.
