Program Description:

Multicultural Accountability | A conversation with Enrique J. Zaldivar

To achieve results, managers and leaders are increasingly requiring a level of competence at performing effectively in multicultural environments, i.e., at practicing Global Diversity and Inclusion.  Thus, as OD professionals, we need to remain ahead of them in our own level of multicultural competence.  And, for those of us who work internationally, this is imperative.  Though, in fact, this matters to all as the world shrinks in an ongoing process of growing interdependence.

Building on participants’ diversity awareness, this conversation strengthens our professional effectiveness by experientially increasing our cultural self-awareness and placing it within a multicultural context.  This is a means towards self-accountability, as Peter Drucker so clearly placed it: “We must seek opportunities to make ourselves accountable to others.”  In essence, together we’ll experience how the most powerful way to remain effective, when in the presence of cultural differences, is not by learning the ‘tricks’ of the other cultures.  It is by, with great courage, authenticity and self-accountability, becoming deeply self-aware of our own cultural biases, of our own cultural filters, which makes us see, and react to, the world they way we do.

About the Facilitator:

In 2001, after 25 years of leadership experience w/P&L responsibilities, Enrique co-founded Inspired-Inc., an international OD consulting & executive coaching firm dedicated to helping leaders and organizations manage change and create effective and sustainable futures. Enrique’s results-based approach to consulting and coaching, which emphasizes multicultural competency as well as the creative tension between authenticity and accountability, has directly added value to hundreds of executives and managers.  They’re leaders in Fortune-500 multinationals, NGOs, supranationals and governments, located in 35 countries, 5 continents. Enrique serves in several executive boards, teaches at a university and holds advanced degrees from México and the US.  He practices yoga and meditation daily; enjoys tennis, reading and painting oil canvases.  He is the proud father of two sons, currently in college.

A "renaissance man", Enrique has excelled in a number of professions undefined consultant, coach, executive, financier, civil engineer, university professor, and retail storeowner. He has been a natural leader in many sectors and roles. He knows the pressures placed on executives and skillfully guides them in a process of discovery, prioritization and action. He specializes in helping sophisticated leaders navigate complex systems in order to have greater impact. Clients, including CEOs and other C-level executives, elected leaders and mid-level managers, consistently commend his ability to enable them to make sense of conflicting data and create strategies that have a positive long-term impact on them and on their organizations. He has helped clients with integrated and sustainable change-efforts, leadership development, organizational effectiveness and record profitability increases.

Previous to forming Inspired-Inc., Enrique served as Chief of Risk Management at the Inter-American Development Bank, where he worked skillfully with other executives, board members and staff to implement a profound change in the Bank's approach to financial risk management. In addition, he led delicate negotiations with high-level government officials from Europe, Asia and the Americas, generating unprecedented levels of satisfaction and accountability for the Bank's main stakeholders.

Enrique serves on the executive boards of the A.K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems as well as the Chesapeake Center for Public Leadership.  He teaches a course on diversity and multicultural competency at the AU/NTL's master's program in OD, in Washington, DC.  He has also taught at the School of Psychology at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

Enrique received his BS in Civil Engineering from La Salle University in Mexico City, his MS in Operations Research and his PD in Management Science & Finance from George Washington University, and his certification in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University.
