Meeting Venue: Until further notice, all CoP events will be virtual using Zoom.  Please refer to the specific event description for exact location.  Relevant and unique Zoom link/password will be included in the registration confirmation email, as well as in reminder emails sent to all who have registered 7 days prior and the day before the event.

If/when in-person meetings resume, we'll use the same location as before detailed below.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, Conference Room B
4805 Edgemoor Lane
Bethesda, MD 20814
Convenient to Bethesda Metro.

Directions:  If you are getting off at the Bethesda Metro, around the corner is the entrance to the building, 4805 Edgemoor Lane.  If you need to, use Google Maps or Waze to find it. When you go in the door take the elevator to the 2nd floor and we are in Room B.  If you are driving, there is a County parking garage just below the B-CC Regional Services Center.  It is the building where the CoP is located.  Entrances are at 7601 Woodmont Ave. and around the corner from the 4805 Edgemoor Lane building entrance.  For both entrances there are signs above them that say Bethesda Center.  There has been a recent change.  There used to be two working elevators that go from the garage up to the floor where the B-CC Regional Services Center is.  Now there is only one.  When you park, take the Old Georgetown elevator and follow the directions to the B-CC Regional Services Center.

Topic: The Role of Our Bodies in Our OD and Coaching Work

Description: Learning to listen to our bodies — “soma” — is a key skill for coaches and OD professionals that must be constantly honed.  Accessing our internal awareness can enhance our observations and expand the options that are available us and to our OD and coaching clients. Despite the fact that our body-mind makes up 90-95% of our whole mind, our thinking minds’ chatter often drowns out this expansive store of wisdom and experience.  Yet soma is always present and waits patiently for us to listen to its messages.

In this session, we’ll learn how to tap into this quiet wisdom and experience. We’ll experience the benefits of listening to our inner-self, and discuss how to integrate our somatic experiences with our thinking minds. The session begins with clarification of what soma is and its value to coaching and OD work. With this grounding we'll learn a simple way to access soma. We’ll end with a discussion of ways to incorporate this into our work.

Topic: No Need To Panic...OD Is Here: Crisis Management Through An OD Lens

Description: "Crisis management" could be the theme of 2020, as our individual, group and systemic abilities to handle unexpected and challenging developments have been repeatedly tested. While crisis management is a subfield and skillset often found in government agencies or media relations departments, those of us working in organization development and the applied behavioral sciences more generally are also uniquely suited to be competent crisis managers and to contribute to crisis management processes that necessarily span several function areas. OD theories, models and approaches have much to offer crisis management, informing how crisis is defined, how to prepare for the inevitability of a crisis occurring, and helping to direct our energies in a productive manner throughout a crisis experience.

    In this session we will:

    • Get grounding on what crisis (or issue) management is and why it's important.
    • Learn some major steps in managing a crisis, from a layoff or breakup to...a global pandemic.
    • Brainstorm how to apply what we know about how human systems work to managing the worst of times, for ourselves and our clients.

    Presenter:  Melissa Kessler, MSOD
